Butyl was developed to augment traditional rubber adhesives. Butyl tapes are less temperature-sensitive and maintain their stickiness at much lower temperatures than natural rubber. With butyl rubber tape, you find a tape that instantly adheres to most surfaces and has a high adhesion level.

Work it between your fingers for a few minutes before use. For full strength you have to knead it a lot more than you would for normal blue tack. You know it is ready when it becomes almost too sticky to get off your fingers.
It is specially formulated so it can be held in place for several hours without leaving any residues when it is removed. You should however, remove the black tack from your equipment within a couple of days. Black Tac is reusable, like Blue Tac

Removal
Once you scrape off some of the tape, you should apply some paint thinner or adhesive remover to dissolve butyl rubber. Apply a generous amount, using a bottle cap, and let it rest for a few minutes for the tape to loosen up. If it loosens correctly, you can easily peel it off. Some caution is advised as to what surface it is used on,  as it can leave some marks.

Wet surface
The surface to be taped should be clean and dry. The tape will not adhere if the surfaces are not properly prepared. Dirty or wet surfaces should be completely cleaned with water, paper towels, dry rags or other materials which will prepare the surface for the tape.

What are the advantages of Butyl?
High initial tack—has a more aggressive hold on contact than acrylic adhesives.
Has a high level of adhesion because it bonds to a huge variety of surfaces.
Less expensive than acrylic adhesive.
Impermeable to air.
Waterproof so it works well in situations where water is a factor.

Does butyl tape Harden?
Butyl tape is a pressure-sensitive adhesive (PSA) that is made from a copolymer of isobutylene and isoprene. This tape has a wide range of temperature resistance and does not harden or become brittle over time like other types of PSA.

Is butyl tape permanently flexible?
Butyl Seal Tape is permanently flexible, never ages, or dries out.
