Sorb-It® Silica Gel Sachets 25g

Sorb-It® packs contain silica gel that will control moisture in contained environments. The pouches prevent corrosion, mildew, mold, rust and other moisture damage during storage and/or shipping. Sorb-it absorbs water from the surrounding environment, but yet remains dry to the touch, even at maximum capacity. Each silica gel pouch measures 9cm x 6cm  - 5" x 3.5"

Sorb-It® packaged silica gel desiccant is made from amorphous silicate. It is a hard, translucent material with an extremely high capacity for moisture at temperatures below 25°C and at humidity levels above 40% RH. Sorb-It® Tyvek packets are designed to control moisture levels within packaged products. The function of Sorb-It® when controlling moisture is like that of a tiny sponge with millions of microscopic pores. Under very low humidity conditions, a small amount of water vapor will be adsorbed in the smallest pores. As humidity increases, the large pores will begin to fill. Unlike a sponge, however, Sorb-It® remains dry and free-flowing, even at maximum adsorption capacity.

 

White silica gel is a non-indicating silica gel. It means that when the silica gel adsorbs moisture, it will continue to be white. This Silica Gel is Cobalt Dichloride Free. There is no chemical reaction, by-products or side effects produced by silica gel and water vapor is absorbed into its internal pores.

Silica, or silicon dioxide (SiO2), is the same material found in quartz. The gel form contains millions of tiny pores that can adsorb and hold moisture. Silica gel is essentially porous sand.
Silica gel is a desiccant -- it adsorbs and holds water vapor

White silica gel is a non-indicating silica gel. It means that when the silica gel adsorbs moisture, it will continue to be white. This kind of silica gel is commonly used in packet. White silica gel is a kind of gel you find in the small packets when you buy some products.

Blue silica gel has cobalt chloride, which allows the blue silica gel change its color to pink when it reached its maximized adsorption capacity. Once pink it can be reactivated with heat to dry out the moisture. When it turns blue again, it’s ready to use. Do not use blue silica gel around food since the cobalt chloride is poisonous.

Orange silica gel has methyl violet which is capable of changing from orange to green, or orange to colorless. It is also toxic and potentially poisonous, even though it does have some medicinal merits. Like blue silica gel, once the color changes to indicate maximum adsorption, it can be reactivated with heat to dry out the moisture. When it turns orange again, it’s ready to use.


‘Recharge’ your silica gel sachets
After a while your gel sachets might stop being as effective as they once were. This is because they have reached the maximum amount of moisture they can absorb. The good news is, they can be ‘recharged’.

 
Silica gel can adsorb about 40 percent of its weight in moisture and can take the relative humidity in a closed container down to about 40 percent. Once saturated, you can drive the moisture off and reuse silica gel by, laying the gel packets outside in the sun for a few hours. Then they are good to go again.

 

Some other typical uses for Silica Gel

Store in camera bags. Silica gel will absorb moisture to keep your lens from fogging or streaking, especially after you've been snapping photos in cold or wet conditions.

Use Silica Gel in your toolbox. The gel will absorb excess moisture and help keep your tools rust-free

Dry out electronic items such as cell phones, wireless microphone transmitter/receiver, hearing aids etc. Remember after the device has gotten wet, do not turn it back on! Pull out the battery and memory card and put the device in a container filled with several packs. Leave it in there at least overnight. Note that if your item has been dropped in salt water the Silica Gel will dry out the item, but it will not remove the salt, which will cause corrosion.

Moisture can wreak havoc with paper. Use Silica Gel with your important documents such as photosor personal doscuments
